Bit by bit, Costa Rica’s tourist business is shedding its rather one-dimensional image. There’s a new crop of high-end hotels that’s out to attract an audience beyond the usual backpackers — which means it’s not necessarily all about the rainforest anymore. Even at Recreo, eco-tourism is never very far away — it’s just that the earth-friendliness happens mostly behind the scenes, and good, old-fashioned hedonistic luxury is front and center.

The accommodations range from freestanding suites to villas of one to five bedrooms, to accommodate anyone from couples to relatively large families. One thing Recreo does have in common with some of the more pared-down resorts is its sense of isolation. You’re twenty minutes by jeep from the nearest town, which isn’t all that far actually, but it feels remote indeed — and the neighboring Santa Rosa National Park offers all the untouched wilderness an adventurer could desire.

That isolation means there’s no popping down to the village for a bite of street food— you’ve got the option of three meals daily prepared by a private chef (on an à la carte basis). And if it lacks some of the pomp and circumstance of an equivalently high-end Caribbean getaway, say, it’s a matter of presentation more than substance. Pools abound, private and public, there’s a spa, gym and tennis facilities, and should the beach beckon, there’ll be a chauffeur waiting with an electric golf cart. But don’t let that be the extent of your adventure — if it can be done in Costa Rica, it can be organized here, from horseback riding and nature walks to surfing, ziplines, whitewater rafting….
