A 16th-century abbey converted into a small and charmingly traditional boutique hotel would be special enough, were it located somewhere far out in the French countryside; in the heart of Paris’s Latin Quarter, however, it’s truly extraordinary. This is the Relais Christine, hidden away in a quiet cobbled courtyard in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, close by to the Louvre and Notre Dame, and a short walk from the banks of the Seine.

The fifty-one rooms vary in size, all individually decorated, but all decked out in Louis XIII antiques and the kind of lush fabrics and upholstery that you come to Paris for in the first place. Beamed ceilings and all manner of period architectural detail keep the eye interested, and unlike some over-ornate classic Parisian interiors, the Relais Christine’s rooms never feel overstuffed.

Views overlook gardens, courtyards or a quiet private street, and some of the suites come with private garden terraces. There’s wireless internet access throughout, and a meeting room in a vaulted cellar — theatrical, maybe, but better than the average boardroom. Also downstairs is the new spa, complete with sauna, jacuzzi and fitness center. There’s no restaurant, but the St. Germain district isn’t hurting for options, including the legendary Les Deux Magots.

LOVED Relais Christine

By aabegglen based in Venice

Stayed May 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Great location. Beautiful hotel. Small, intimate. Great breakfast. Nice work out room - especially for Paris.

I Disliked

The jacuzzi that we were so excited to jump into after a long flight from the States was totally out of commission. Disliked the fact that we didn't stay longer.

A true gem

By kburgher583022 based in Atlanta

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The location is in a fantastic, quaint walking neighborhood with restaurants, pastries shops, etc. all within steps. The small, boutique hotel staff were very professional, informative, and warm/friendly (and spoke English). Upon check-in, we were upgraded to a large junior suite which had a separate living/sitting area apart from the bedroom. The bath was very nice with 2 sinks and a shower and tub - very large for Paris standards. Overall, our experience here was great.

I Disliked

They could have put some brighter bulbs in the lamps, as it was a bit dim in both the bedroom and bath. The closet was large enough, but again a bit dark.

Relais Christine stay between 25-26.06.2008

By tkaljuorg based in Tabasalu

Stayed June 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

We booked two superior rooms through the internet and everything went well. The rooms were not that spacious but you have to keep in mind that you are in Paris and specifically in Saint Germain. One room had the courtyard view and the other opened to the street. Surprisingly the street view room was also very quiet. The location is very quiet but at the same time you are just a corner away from the big buzz. The taxi driver had difficulties finding the street but that does happen in Paris and as we had been in the neighborhood before we gave him directions. The receptionist was extremely friendly and so was the concierge. We will be sure to choose the same hotel for our next stay in Paris.

Relais Christine

Review

I have stayed at the Relais Christine before and have always had an excellent experience. Unfortunately this time around I got stuck in room 5. It's street level, dark, comperatively noisy and you need to keep the curtains drawn to keep passerbys from peeking in. And the room still cost 300 Euros. So by all means stay with the Relais but avoid Room 5 and all others on street level.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
