You could be forgiven for imagining that a place with a name as old-fashioned as Relais Ravestein, housed in a centuries-old canal-side aristocratic residence might be a bit too sedate and grown-up for our tastes — especially one in Bruges, the self-styled “Venice of the north,” a city best known for its medieval architecture and for… well, for being the capital of Flanders.

You’d be wrong, though. Even in person, squinting at it from the middle distance, Relais Ravestein looks like the sort of place your parents might stay. But once through the doors it’s apparent that whatever modern-design virus has taken over Brussels and Amsterdam has found its way to Bruges as well.

The classic architecture of the old mansion — sloped attic roofs, fuller-than-full-length windows, massive timber beams — still remains, livened by sleek modern furnishings, state-of-the-art fixtures, and a style of interiors that ranges from graphic and playful to minimal and restrained, often in the same room. With just sixteen suites, it’s intimate, and even with a restaurant and bar that are open to non-guests, it’s in no danger of getting loud; it is, however, by a mile the hippest hotel in Bruges.
