Residence Hilda
Via dei Servi 40, XENICA Srl
Florence, Italy
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Lively
12 Rooms
In the foreigner’s mind, Florence strains under the weight of so much history that it’s sometimes difficult to remember that it’s the 21st century there too. It’s not all Renaissance architecture and crumbling frescoes — modern life goes on there, just like anywhere else, and contemporary small hotels like the Residence Hilda operate alongside the grand old-fashioned five-stars.
And it isn’t just in terms of design that the Hilda is the polar opposite of the grand hotels. This place hardly feels like a hotel at all — with just twelve suites, no public spaces to speak of, and the kind of minimal service that keeps to the background, it’s for the low-maintenance traveler, the sort who doesn’t need constant looking after.
Occupying a converted apartment building on a side street just north of the Duomo, the Hilda is improbably well-located for sightseers, shoppers, and business travelers alike. Suites are handsome, modern, with contemporary designer furnishings and a calming cream palette. Windows, looking out over the picturesque red rooftops of the city, are double-glazed to keep out the street noise. Fully equipped kitchens are standard, but cooking is by no means obligatory — any number of restaurants lie within walking (or delivery) distance.
Kids:
Guests over the age of 13 are considered adults. Some rooms accommodate 3 or more. The "Family Suite and Family Suite Superior" room sleeps up to 5 guests. For crib/cot, must book "Classic Suite" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "Superior Suite" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "Family Suite" room or larger.
Cribs are available and may be subject to an additional fee. Roll-away beds available for an additional fee of €30. No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.
Babysitting services provided by screened outside help at €15.00 per hour.
Emergency amenities include Doctor on call available 24 hours, milk bottles and bottles holder for the microwave, cribs and highchairs, baby plastic tub if the Suites with the tub are not available, changing tables and etc. And of course we never run out of lolly-pops at the Reception!.

The location of the hotel was excellent, it was right near the Duomo in Florence, which is pretty much walking distance to all the major sites. There are excellent restaurants nearby.
The staff was very good. They were extremely helpful in determining what to do, where to go, making reservations and sifting through the myriad restaurant options.
The rooms were perfect for families, they were large, modern, full of amenities with excellent bathrooms.
I would highly recommend this hotel for families with a modern style disposition.
What the hotel could do better
Not full service hotel, they are essentially serviced apartments. This is not a necessarily a negative, but one should be aware prior to booking.

Cordial welcome, extremely nice and helpful staff. The room was not a regular hotel room, but a two room apartment with a fully fitted kitchen and a large bath room, could have stayed there for weeks! Cozy, yet modern interior, very nice and elegant atmosphere and good location: walking distance from the city center, yet outside the big tourist streams. The staff was very forthcoming and friendly. And this all at an excellent price! I can recommend it and will return, when back in Florence next time.
What the hotel could do better
Literally nothing bad to say!

Superb location, really close to everything you might want to look at, easy to get to the station. Spacious rooms with everything comfortably laid out, not cluttered, crisp and simple decor. Very comfortable bed.
What the hotel could do better
Just as well we didn't want to watch TV - the only english-speaking channels available were BBC World and CNN!
There was a lot of noise from the apartment above us. It sounded like they were dragging furniture around and footsteps thumped up and down continually, loud and annoying. Fortunately it was only for one night, but this would have been a major problem if it continued.
If the sound insulation is like this in all the suites, it needs attending to. Meanwhile, if you're thinking of staying here, request a top floor apartment.

Residence Hilda is like a hotel in every respect save that it does not have a restaurant or other hotel-like communal facilities attached. Instead you have an apartment with a bedroom and separate living area, so it feels like a suite in a very nice hotel. It is serviced like a hotel - cleaned every day. Someone even does the washing up for you in the kitchenette.
We found the staff extremely helpful.
RH is a traditional Florence townhouse which was apparently refurbished 3 years ago and everything feels new. It is very stylish, fresh and clean inside. It is also brilliantly central - literally a few hundred yards from the Duomo.
It seemed exceptionally good value for money.
What the hotel could do better
Whilst RH have obviously spent a lot on refurbishing the apartments to a high standard, they've cuts some corners on some of the furnishings. The sofa is an example of this - it was not brilliantly comfortable and the seats kept sliding off all of the time.
These are the exceptions, rather than the rule, however, and I would definitely go back if I was staying in Florence.

The room was a small self contained apartment comprising of 2 rooms (one with a queen bed and walk in wardrobe, the other with fold out sofa couch dining table chairs and a small kitchenette). I loved the pride taken in the care and maintenance of the hotel. Walls doors fixtures fittings appliances all looked brand new because they were so well maintained and kept spotlessly cleaned. The reception staff were all very polite and helpful and able to provide us with any information we needed.
What the hotel could do better
There was nothing to dislike. It was fantastic and we would stay there again.

There are a few eccentricities here for what is quite an expensive hotel. There is no restaurant, no conventional room service and the check-in desk is closed at certain times of day. However, for anyone travelling with children (there is a sofabed in the living room) or for those of us who prefer not to eat hotel food three times a day, there is a wonderful trade off to be made. For a start, the larger rooms are enormous and self-contained, with a separate bedroom, a small elegant kitchen area and a dining table. All tea-making facilities and cooking utensils are provided and you can ask the management to supply groceries. A family of four can hence make themselves at home - not something you can do in a typical European hotel room, unless you want to pay £500 a night for some overblown honeymooners' suite.
As if this were not enough, there is free broadband, the location is superb, and the enchanting street (leading directly to the Duomo) in which it is situated contains every facility you could reasonably want. The staff are delightful. I offered to pay for a late (6pm) check-out. Since they had a few vacancies, they allowed me this for free.
This is a new concept in city-centre hotels. We loved it.
What the hotel could do better
This is the only one of its kind. If only there were a chain of them, with at least one in every major European city.
I feel slightly mean marking the facilities as merely good - this is only fair if you are to judge the Hilda by the standards of other hotels. Pleasingly different might be better.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
