Rincon del Socorro

Ruta Provincial 40 KM 83

Esteros del Iberá, Corrientes, Argentina

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Secluded

A former cattle ranch, in the midst of a protected nature reserve founded by former North Face owner Doug Tompkins, provides the setting for Rincon del Socorro. This is the Argentinean estancia experience at its most authentic, complete with traditional quincho barbecue and horseback rides, filtered through the lens of one of the country’s most ambitious conservationist undertakings. Guests at Rincon del Socorro become part of the restoration project, witnessing firsthand the return of endangered wildlife and regrowth of savannah grasslands in this formerly chewed-up landscape.

The main ranch house is a long, low building with the requisite red zinc roof, painstakingly restored using the same regional woods to preserve the look and feel of the original structure. The six guest rooms are varied in décor and layout, with checkered floors and reclaimed wooden furniture providing continuity. For those who’d like a bit more seclusion, there are three private bungalows a short walk from the ranch. Rustic charm abounds, but it’s never too thickly applied, and there’s plenty of indoor public space to enjoy.

These accommodations are perfectly charming, but if you’ve traveled all the way to this remote section of the Ibera wetlands, you’re probably more concerned about the outdoor adventure. Here, Rincon del Socorro doesn’t disappoint, offering plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with strangely adorable creatures like carpinchos (the biggest rodent in the world) and anteaters. As part of the ecosystem revival, the estancia maintains its own organic garden, and its vegetables, along with free-range meats, make up the core of the cuisine, which can be enjoyed in the main house or the quincho barbecue hut.
