Rio Hermoso Hotel De Montana

San Martin de los Andes, Argentina

Atmosphere: Quiet

7 Rooms

In the posh lake district of Argentina, big is beautiful. The postcard-pretty region of snow-capped mountains, virgin forests, mammoth ice-blue lakes and glamorous waterfront resorts is, after all, the gateway to the vast landscape of Patagonia. It’s also the place where Ted Turner and the Benetton family have snapped up huge ranches for personal use. There are exceptions to the “bigger is better” rule, of course, though few quite so lovely as the Rio Hermoso Hotel de Montaña.

The name, Spanish for “beautiful river,” is a literal description of the hotel’s privileged location on the grassy banks of a quiet river that winds past forests and rocky cliffs. The charm of this particular location is difficult to capture — imagine a magical forest where a baby deer might wander into the clearing and eat from your hand. The minds behind Rio Hermoso clearly saw this vision this and designed everything — the terraces, the bay windows in the living room, the tea tables and plush white chaise lounges on the riverbank — to take full advantage of the bucolic setting and, in many cases, to actually blend in the with the landscape.

The interior look mixes a minimalist sensibility with a rustic setting. Guest rooms are airy and sleek, outfitted in natural wood and earthy hues, with slate fixtures in the spacious bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river — some rooms have private wooden terraces where you can soak up the scenery with a glass of Malbec. Downstairs is a sophisticated living room, especially inviting when the fireplace is going, and a restaurant specializing in freshwater fish and Patagonian delicacies like smoked wild boar. Nights are cozy but the days are spectacular — breakfast is served with a view, or you can just start the day by stretching out on a chaise in front of the river. Wait five minutes and someone will be over to take your coffee order.
