Riva Hotel, on the Croatian island of Hvar, is something of a time capsule — the sort of place that just might take you back to the days when this whole design boutique thing started. For any number of world-historical reasons that don’t really bear examination here, Croatia is, as a tourist destination, at least a decade or two behind just about anywhere else in Europe. This is no dismissal — if the boom in business there is any indication, there’s plenty of demand for a bit of not-yet-spoiled European coastline.

Here many hotels are dragged bleary-eyed out of the Seventies and into the twentieth century, and a hotel like the Riva, a hundred-year-old Italianate villa redesigned in a modern-minimalist style, stands head and shoulders above the rest. The location is prime, right on the waterfront of the Hvar harbor (itself easily accessible by ferry from Split), and the surprisingly stylish interiors, with rooms dominated by enlarged stills from classic films, are just icing on the cake.

It’s not quite velvet-glove luxury, but it’s as decadent as Hvar gets, and it’s equally well suited for sportsmen, sightseers, or clubbers — that’s the marina just outside, and the historic village streets and the up-and-coming Hvar nightlife are just steps away. In fact it’s worth renting a car, and making a day trip or two out of the harbor town: the island is one of the coast’s most scenic, and is home to a thriving wine tradition.

One of the most amazing trips of my life, and certanly the hotel had to do with it 50%.I loved the view from my room. in hotel adria and the staff was excellent, verry helpfull. When we left to catch the catamaran to go back to split at 7 am the staff had prepared us a lunch box with food. I found that really nice. Its located in the best area of Hvar.

What the hotel could do better

I didnt like the fact that the pool is covered. It doesnt make any sence on being there when the day is extremely nice.

    LOCATION

It's on the harbour front - very pretty, with lots of boats and super yachts to envy.

    DECOR

    Contemporary, well styled.

    FOOD

Great fish - but then great fish is available everywhere in Hvar.

    DISCOUNT SCHEME

Many of the local hotels have a reciprocal 10% discount scheme on dining etc which is pretty handy.

What the hotel could do better

    NOISE

I took notice of one reviewer's comment regarding noise from the bar/club on the ground floor of the hotel, and asked the receptionist for a room sitauted away from the bar. He promptly gave us a room directly above it on the first floor. After complaining we were offered a smaller but much quieter Superior room on the top floor.

    ROOMS

The designer omitted to put a door on the bathroom of the Superior rooms, so instead they enclosed the toilet in a bizarre glass box, as some strange form of compensation.

    POOR ADVICE

My partner asked the manager to help her organise a romantic sunset boat trip for my birthday. She was assured it would be very romantic, and that wine and fruit would be served. The trip was on a 24 foot boat, in which we were cramped into the cockpit with the skipper and his wife. Fortunately they were lovely people and a joy to spend 4 hours with, drinking beer (not wine) and eating some of their home grown figs. However, it was not romantic - it was an active sailing trip. Good fun, but definitely NOT what the manager had described.

    POOR SERVICE

After booking one night's stay on the Tablet Hotels website l I noticed an offer for two nights on the hotel's own website which included champagne, spa treatments and dinner for two - for the same price as two standard nights. When we arrived I asked the receptionist to adjust the booking to two nights to take advantage of the offer. I contacted Tablet Hotels prior to the request and they sent an email confirmation to the hotel. However, the hotel receptionist and manager were totally uncooperative and refused the offer, and I was forced to book two standard nights stay. Tablet Hotels were strenuous in their efforts to make the hotel change the booking. I was given amazing service by Tablet Hotels in this matter, and zero service from the Riva Hotel.

    FOOD

If you order anything other than fish it's generally poorly made. My fillet steak arrived swimming in a tepid gravy-esque sauce.

Loved the hotel - the location is fantastic and the service excellent. Through booking with Tablet hetels, we were upgraded to a room with a balcony (superior) which was an unexpected bonus! I know there are reviews saying the rooms are small but I didn't think this deterred from the overall hotel. I would definately go there again; in fact I am missing it here in grey England!

What the hotel could do better

The hidden city and tourist tax was a bit of a pain to find out there - this should be highlighted beforehand.

The hotel is in a great location for people watching, right on the main quay.

The intention behind the inyerior design of the place is great - its just a shame that practicalities!

As a guest at the Riva you can use the pool complex at the Amfora Hotel, which was great if you wanted a day off beach hopping

What the hotel could do better

I like to consider myself a fairly easy going traveller, reasonably easily pleased. Not a whinger. However, staying at the Riva for 5 nights I found to be a really frustrating experience. If we had been paying £50 a night then I would have been absolutely happy with our experience, however, for £200 a night the Hotel Riva did not provide anything close to value for money and left us feeling short changed and a little bit angry. Here's why.

    1. Noise. The hotel management thought it a good idea to open a 'nightclub' directly under the hotel. The first room we were given was on the first floor, unfortunately right on top of the 'club'. Now, a little bit of noise I can deal with. Vibrating floors, I'm afraid I cant. When we asked to move rooms the receptionist raised his eyes the the ceiling and agreed to show us alternative rooms. When I asked, he said that guests complained and asked to move every day. It just strikes me as very strange why a hotel would choose to sabotague their success in this way, especially as the 'club' was pretty much empty - so clearly not a money spinner for them.

    2. Tiny rooms. Although cleverly designed the majority of rooms (we saw several when we were looking for a quieter options!) really were too small to provide real comfort. There was nowhere to put bags, unpack clothes, or even hang up towels. So it was all a bit cluttered and uncomfortable

    3. Breakfast. Really was a bit stingy. In a hotel charging £200 a night I would expect a pretty decent spread. There wasn't much on offer really - things ran out and weren't replaced, if you wanted a cappucinno or even water you had to pay for it, and it was totally understaffed.

    4. Service. The presence, knowledge and general ability/ willingness to help of the conciege and reception staff was patchy. They were difficult to get hold of and seemed to resent being asked for advice (e.g. good beaches/ restaurants).

The view from the marina room is amazing and close access to Shops and cafe's is perfect.

Hotel Riva is part of the Suncani Group, you can use the facilities at the other Suncani hotels in Hvar ie spa massage, bar's and book it to your room at the Riva!!! Great Idea.

P.S the amazing pool at the Amfora is just a short walk away and free!!!

I will defiantly be going back!!!

What the hotel could do better

If you have a car you may have a few problems.

The roads on Hvar are a bit scary.

Access to parking near the hotel is a bit rubbish as the roads have no names!!! and unless you arrange a golf buggy to bring your bags from the carpark to the hotel, it's a 15 minute walk on rough pathways.
