In Italy even the most modern hotel has hundreds or thousands of years of architectural history to deal with; one hypermodern hotel in Rome has a working archaeological site in the basement. By these standards, Riva Lofts is on the young side: this 19th-century complex on the banks of the Arno river has lived only three previous lives — a factory, artisans’ workshops, an architectural studio — on the way to its present incarnation, an immaculately designed ten-suite modernist luxury boutique.
Period stone walls and arched windows share time with concrete floors and modern additions in glass and metal, just as contemporary artworks and antique mirrors and chairs coexist peacefully with sleek designer furniture and the absolute latest in lighting and bathroom fixtures. It’s a bit like a photo shoot for a high-end design catalog, albeit a pretty livable one — all suites have private entrances, all but one have kitchens, and a few have private terraces or views across the river toward the Parco delle Cascine or Brunelleschi’s Cupola.
And along with all this private space in the suites, there’s a generous helping of common space as well, from the sitting room, lined with bookshelves and warmed by a stone fireplace, to the white sandstone swimming pool at the center of the courtyard garden. Newly added is a pair of extra perks: in-room massage or yoga in the garden with an expert trainer.

What I liked:
One of the most unique properties we had the pleasure of experiencing. . A French cottage/farm feel with a very well done modern feel.
The staff were helpful. Juliett, a staff member, was especially accomodating. The rooms were memorable. The breakfast house/living room was beyond beautiful. My wife and I had this amazing space to ourselves one evening where we enjoyed a bottle of wine from the mini bar and listened to the excellent eclectic mix of CDs provided by Riva Lofts.
The outside grounds were perfection.
One quibble: there were 2 families with a total of 4 kids that were traveling together staying in the 2 units above us. They seemed to be totally unsupervised and they constantly ran and jumped in the area above our first floor unit. This went on for several hours the first evening. I mentioned it to the female clerk who said she heard the loud running that she could hear from her office. Her repsonse was that the kids are probably wound up and they'd probably get tired. The running and jumping continued and I nicely asked her to mention something to them. I don't think she said a thing to them although she said it was the loudest ruckus heard by her in 4 months working there. They finally went out for dinner at 9 pm and returned at 11. Same thing the next night.
The problem is that there is absolutely no one at the hotel after 8pm. They have an emergency number for after hours but it was never formally given to us. It was buried in their literature. Also, some parents provide no limits for their kids. These kids were running around and knocking on guests doors but not really running away. They probably didn't expect any punishment. Great job by these parents.
What the hotel could do better:
Please see the above re unsupervised kids, the lack of the hotel staff being there and the hotel staffing not doing anything about the kids knocking on doors, jumping on the floors and beds above us and running around the facility with no staff members present.
