Your first clue comes by way of the letter Y — Riyad El Mezouar’s slightly archaic spelling hints at the atmosphere of the place, which, while not exactly antique, is about as classic as they come in the world of Marrakech medina riad hotels.
Of course classic doesn’t just happen by accident. El Mezouar’s owners, a pair of French architects and designers, clearly put some effort into crafting its interiors. They were fortunate to begin with a grand and well-preserved 18th-century mansion, and many of the original architectural details are intact — but the presence of details from as far off as X shows that there was more to it than simply brushing off a coat of dust.
In the end it’s all about the personality, and how well the sensibility matches your taste. With just five rooms there’s no crowd to speak of, and the interior courtyard and the roof terrace (with its view out towards the Atlas mountains) are pretty much the extent of the public spaces. It’s more or less the sweet spot, a riad hotel that’s neither too modern nor too old-fashioned, but pretty much just right.

What I liked:
Decor/style of bedroom/bathroom. The staple breakfast choices were great (homemade crepes/muffins), but the added option to have a fruit salad, hard boiled eggs for only a small fee was a great addition. Service from check-in to check-out was tailored to the guests' needs, from walking us into town (Marrakech can be daunting at first glance) to organizing a trip to a lesser-known spa. Extras while we were in the room (drinks and snacks) hit the spot!
