Round Hill Hotel and Villas

Over the years Jamaica as a holiday destination has transformed from the British colonial retreat of the likes of Ian Fleming into a slightly more downmarket affair, and it’s easy to feel that the student backpackers and hard-drinking hedonists have taken over.
At Round Hill, however, the old Jamaica is alive and well, all understated elegance in casual dress, a place where one imagines British aristocracy and famous Americans letting their hair down a bit, tended to by the upright and exceedingly formal service staff.
True aristocrats would certainly rent one of the twenty-seven villas in its entirety, while the rest of us could probably make do with just a suite carved from a villa, or a room in the Pineapple House, facing the Caribbean. Villas come in two- to four-bedroom varieties, each staffed with its own gardener, housekeeper and even a cook in the private kitchen.
Even the humblest twin room is outfitted in a handsome plantation style, with antique furnishings and plenty of space. Villas are a bit more idiosyncratic in décor, owing to the fact that they’re all privately owned, and rented out only when their owners are elsewhere occupied.
One of the villas happens to be owned by none other than Ralph Lauren, and though it’s not available to the public, the simple fact of it goes a long way toward describing Round Hill’s posh-casual atmosphere. And though you won’t be able to talk your way into his villa, you can quite easily get a look at the Lauren-designed hotel lounge.
As for entertainment, forget about some kind of heaving swingers’ nightclub: here it’s more like dining by the sea, after a day spent around the pool, at the private beach or in the Elemis spa.
The hotel has no minimum age restrictions.

What I liked:
The profile we saw on TABLET before we arrived.
What the hotel could do better:
It was awful. RoundHill offers two types of accomodations - some modern, bright, simple hotel rooms and some dingy, ugly, outdated "villas" filled with mildewy furtniture and tag-sale decorations. Not surprisingly, we booked an ocean/pool-view patio suite in the "hotel" portion of the resort, and were SO looking forward to a night of luxury at the end of our trip and after a week on the cliffs in Negril. Unfortunately, everything about RoundHill was a complete and total disappointment. We arrived to find out that we had been "upgraded", but were told our room was not ready and were sent to lunch while the room was readied. When our room was finally ready, we were then driven up into the hill, far far away from the ocean front room we'd booked, to a room in one of the dingy villas. When we expressed our disappointment, we then spent the next hour being dragged around the resort to look at alternative villa rooms; after continually declining their "upgrade" offers, management finally admitted that all of the rooms hotel were occupied and the accomodations we had booked were in fact unavailable. When we went so far as looking for flights home to avoid staying in one of the villa rooms they were offering, RoundHill suddenly found a room in the hotel for us but then left us waiting for almost 2 hours before granting us access to the room after 5 PM. Once we were in it, the room met our expectations but the time and energy we had to expend to actually get what we booked was absolutely unforgivable, especially at the rates they charge. Nothing really got better from there - the food was mediocre at best, the beach and pool were so crowded there were no chairs to be had, and towels were in short supply. Bottom line, the entire experience was horrific and I would never stay at RoundHill again. Ever.

What I liked:
Hotel room and grounds were immaculate. Great, attentive staff. Beautiful protected beach. Small but nice pool. Good food, especially the buffet breakfast. Lovely afternoon tea spread. Complimentary use of paddle boats, kayaks, snorkel gear, and glass bottom boat.
What the hotel could do better:
Start dinner service earlier than 7:30. With a 3 year old in tow, we ended up ordering from the bar menu (not bad, but limited) almost every night.
