A lot has changed since the Royalton opened in 1988, both inside and outside its walls. This is arguably the original boutique hotel, having spawned a legion of imitators, many of which sought to duplicate the formula of stylish-enough bedrooms atop stunning public spaces — both, in the Royalton’s case, by Philippe Starck.

Now, after a much-touted remodel, most of what was Starck about the Royalton is gone, starting with the famous larger-than-life lobby. These days that sort of theatrical ostentation is out of style, and what’s in is the understated, clubby luxury look that you’ll see here. The palette is dark and masculine, full of brown leather and brown wood, and the atmosphere is more discreet than it used to be, more members-club than fashion-show.

The rooms have been updated as well, though perhaps more subtly — they’re oversized, light and airy, in contemporary neutral colors against a backdrop of mahogany paneling that’s calculated to put you in mind of a cabin in an old-fashioned steam liner. Bathrooms, though, go beyond what you’d see on a ship, or in many hotels for that matter; five-foot circular Roman baths are pure indulgence, and still a bold choice in a nation of showerers.

And the place is still abuzz, albeit more quietly; the new Royalton is less stage set, more hotel. Brasserie 44, the new version of the Royalton’s restaurant, is the sort of place that stands on its own, as a restaurant — it’s run by John McDonald, from Lever House and Lure Fishbar, and it’s cozy and unpretentious, two things you can’t accuse most hotel restaurants of being.

Tony

My opinion

By Tony based in Long Ditton

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

It's easy and depending on the room that I'm given makes me feel at home... This is my 3rd stay this year.

I Disliked

Sometimes the bar waitress service is slow. When I checked in the room I was allocated had not been cleaned... They very quickly resolved it and gave me a new room... However it's still anoying having just stepped off a trans atlantic flight.

Service was excellent all around. Atmosphere very chic and sophisticated. Price could not be beat - we thought it was a mistake at first.

I Disliked

Rooms were on the small side but very comfortable. Lighting in the bathroom was too dim for the three women in our party.

Life in the dark side

By yryan based in London

Stayed September 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

The entrance lobby was lovely, very elegant and warm. The room was comfortable with good amenities including a ridiculous but fun 5ft circular bath complete with disco glitterball mosaic wall.

I Disliked

Unfortunately the room had no natural daylight. There was a window that looked onto a one of those New York canyons where several buildings intersect leaving a brief amount of space in between. At 10am it was as dark as 3am and therefore quite gloomy. Also, although the size of the room was not small by New York standards it was too small to work in and had an inadequate number of power sockets. Certainly the room I had did not seem to be designed for business use.

Royalton

By aroytberg582577 based in Boston

Stayed June 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

I loved the renovation, I haven't stayed at Royalton for quite a while. Upon my arrival, the reception manager was able to give me a lovely room with a balcony - what a great re-introduction to the hotel. The car valet and door service were impeccable considering the challenging location on the busy midtown street. the door staff was extremely friendly and courteous!

I Disliked

The room didn't feel meticulously clean... nothing bad, but just little dust on the wood furniture.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
