In a few short years Palm Springs has gone from nostalgia act to youth movement — while it’s still got loads of mid-century appeal, it’s expanded its demographics quite a bit, including a clientele that wasn’t born yet the last time Palm Springs was hip. This, not incidentally, is more or less the mission of the San Francisco–based Joie de Vivre group: boutique style with a broad appeal, hip but never alienating. The Saguaro is their entrée into the California desert, and its 249 colorful rooms are a welcome addition to the south side of Palm Springs (just down the road from the Ace, also not incidentally).
The pool scene is the center of the social life, no surprise in this town, but it’s hardly the only space worth spending time in. El Jefe is a Mexico City–style eatery, and Tinto branches out into Basque tapas and Spanish wines, both helmed by Iron Chef alum and James Beard award winner José Garces. There’s a spa that similarly blends the accessible and the luxe, which might be a shorthand expression of the Saguaro’s whole mission — it’s stylish but inclusive rather than exclusive, and the comforts never cross over into crass extravagance. Palm Springs has rarely looked so up to date.

What I liked:
The service that we got from everyone was excellent, the prices were beyond reasonable, and our mountain-facing (corner) room was bigger than my first apartment in New York City. The guy who checked us in could not have been friendlier, offering us a choice of hotel floors, and the room he gave us was absolutely brilliant. But what really makes the Saguaro is the pool - spacious enough to find quiet even when there are kids and large groups, and with amazing bar and restaurant service at prices you rarely see in a nice hotel. The staff at the pool were on the right side of attentive without being cloying or aggressive, and the service we got both at the pool and from the Mexican bar/restaurant inside was superb.
What the hotel could do better:
For a young property it's already starting to show it's age, but I guess it's easier to notice little things when the colour palette is so bright. There were minor paint chips in our bathroom and the pool chairs were a little bit dirty the first day they were there, but in the course of our stay the pool loungers were all cleaned.

What I liked:
The decor online looked nice.
What the hotel could do better:
The rooms smelled terrible. We had to change rooms once, the second room was even worse than the first. We were solicited for a threesome in the hotel bar by a drunk old man (no joke)
