South Tyrol is dotted with former hunting lodges, a Germanic tradition befitting a place that straddles Austrian and Italian culture, language, and lifestyle. More and more often they’re finding themselves converted into luxury boutique hotels, some of them quite contemporary in design. San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge, though stylishly updated, keeps a little closer to its roots. It’s only available to one party at a time, its four bedrooms housing up to ten guests — prepare to encounter no one else except the owners and maybe a chef or two for the duration.
The owners, prominent fashion-industry couple Giorgia and Stefano Barbini, have poured plenty of love (and a bit of money) into renovating this 16th-century lodge, nestled in a forest overlooking the town of Brunico. Outside, a rough-hewn wooden fence encloses a hydrotherapy whirlpool, the first hint that the Barbinis have taken their lodge a bit upmarket. The second is the underfloor heating. Many of San Lorenzo’s charms are timeless, though — the four upstairs bedrooms are decorated in gorgeous blond Tyrolean wood, and drifting off with a view of the lush Badia valley, with the occasional castle spire peeking out of the greenery, pretty much ensures pleasant dreams.
Guests who opt for the VIP package are treated to regional recipes prepared by Giorgia in conjunction with a local chef, using the kitchen’s classic wood-fired stove. Stefano takes care of the wine, and calls in a local sommelier upon request. This kind of unobtrusive, there-if-you-want-it service extends to the spa, where guests can self-steam in the Turkish baths, or give in to the lure of expert attention and have the Barbinis summon their masseuse.
