San Telmo Luxury Suites

These days a stylish, subtly luxurious boutique hotel is about as hard to find in Buenos Aires as an outdoor café — which is to say, not at all. Differentiation, more than ever, is the key to success. What sets San Telmo Luxury Suites apart from the rest is something almost intangible. Call it atmosphere, call it execution; there’s nothing overly conceptual about a 19th-century mansion in an up-and-coming district, but this one so perfectly suits its setting that you’d think the neighborhood was named after the hotel, instead of the other way around.

The suites themselves are happily out of scale with the building; the owners are to be commended for resisting the temptation to pack in more than twelve. In the lofted bedrooms, brushed-steel headboards clash evocatively with centuries-old ceiling beams, and the reception, with its antique chairs and tastefully tarnished floors, clashes similarly with the glass and steel of the residential spaces. This sort of clash is becoming something of a Buenos Aires signature; just outside, cosmopolitan hipsters share the parks with tango dancers and ultra-modern shop fronts look out over cobblestone streets. It’s a neighborhood whose charms include the city’s oldest café (the Tortoni) and the Museum of Modern Art. In a way, San Telmo distills BA to its purest essence — and there’s no hotel that’s more San Telmo than this one.
