Minimum stay in effect over Christmas and major US holidays.

Sandy Lane once boasted the only 18-hole golf course on Barbados, and in its Sixties heyday, it played host to luminaries from Queen Elizabeth and Jackie and Aristotle Onassis to TS Eliot and even Elton John. After a period of decline, the old, legendary Sandy Lane is back, and possibly better than ever.

Golf is still the centerpiece of the resort—this happens to be the place where a certain American golf champion and his Swedish model wife were married—and though its course is no longer the only one on the island, it is still the best. And the resort, too, has an air of untroubled superiority about it; it's hard to imagine staying anywhere else, as one of the resort's Bentleys carries you up the driveway.

In a way, that Bentley is the essence of Sandy Lane. The old saw holds that a Bentley is “meant to be driven, a Rolls to be driven in”; but they do things differently here. In other hotels check-in is a place where you stand in line with your bags, credit card in hand — at Sandy Lane check-in is something that happens behind the scenes, while you are sipping a drink and admiring the view from your (massive) room.

Yes, the VIP treatment runs deep here, and there really are no rooms that are less than excellent (and at these prices, there had better not be). Should you be the rare creature who requires even more space or even more servants, there is the astonishing five-bedroom private villa, practically large enough to secede from the resort and declare itself an independent B&B. The rest of us who lack the means to afford the Villa (rates run into the tens of thousands of dollars per night) will have to make do with a hotel and golf club that is merely excellent.

Hotel Policies:

Minimum stay requirements of 3 to 7 nights are in effect over Christmas/New Year and major US holidays.
