Shangri-La Hotel, Zhongshan

Style: Contemporary Classic

463 Rooms
We’re not yet at the point where second-tier Chinese cities like Zhongshan have got cutting-edge design-oriented boutique hotels of their own. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some very fine places to stay. The Shangri-La group is known across Asia for high-end hospitality on a massive scale, and the Shangri-La Hotel, Zhongshan, is a fine example: at 463 rooms and suites, it’s certainly not small, but more like a self-contained world of luxury.
This is a city, and indeed a region of China, that sees quite a lot of international business traffic — it’s close by to Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, and is a manufacturing center in its own right. Business travelers will have no complaints with the Shangri-La, and it’s more than suited for leisure guests as well: public areas and meeting spaces are plentiful and spacious, there’s a health club and full-service spa, and the rooms and suites come equipped with all the modern necessities, from full-size writing desks and broadband internet access to plush duvet-covered beds and oversized spa-like bathrooms. Club rooms offer an upgrade in comfort and access to the Horizon Club lounge, and the suites cross over into serious VIP territory.
The only caveat is the location. Here in the Eastern District you’re slightly removed from the city center — then again you’re quite close to the government offices, and in this bracket, most guests wouldn’t balk at a taxi ride.
