No matter how many stylish boutique hotels open in New York City, it seems it’s never quite enough. So to the Thompson group, who seem to be opening an endless stream of them, we can only say: keep them coming. New in Tribeca, surrounded by some of lower Manhattan’s top restaurants and shops, is the Smyth, a 100-room luxury boutique standing proudly over West Broadway.
Here the dark and slightly masculine Thompson house style is used to stunning effect, its rooms and suites clean in line yet rich in color, its public spaces swanky and romantic, whether by day or by night. Fittings are strictly boutique-luxe, with iPod docks and massive LCDs in the bedrooms, and faultless high-flow rain showers and REN products in the striking tiled bathrooms.
It suits the neighborhood perfectly, which is very much the point — it’s halfway between 60 Thompson and Gild Hall both in geographic and stylistic terms. Downstairs there’s a surprisingly well-equipped fitness center, and the ground floor is given over to a dark and clubby lounge. Between that and Plein Sud, a new brasserie by Frederick Lesort, you could say the center of gravity of Tribeca’s nightlife has shifted a bit farther to the south.

What I liked:
The size of the rooms are incredibly spacious for NYC. Have stayed in about 10 other hotels in NYC and nothing comes close to this for value and location.
The beds are fantastic.
The bathroom is enormous.
The service staff are great.
The cocktails are to be enjoyed.
What the hotel could do better:
The service in the restaurant, particularly at breakfast, was extremely poor. Considering the attentiveness of all the other service staff at the hotel this mars the experience somewhat.
There was a smell in my bathroom that the hotel did their best to get rid of but came back after a few days - think they might have a problem in some of their bathrooms - one of my travelling companions had the same issue but the others had none. The attention of the Assistant Manager though to try to fix this and personally respond should be commended.

What I liked:
Great location. Like the new Plein Sud restaurant. Very nice people.
All the major subways converge within blocks, making it easy to shoot everywhere.
What the hotel could do better:
Had nil, almost a negative, AT&T cell reception -- I'm sure due to the awesome, cool, quiet, big, inside room I had. Would be great of there was a repeater or mCell to help out.
