Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich

It says something about the state of the business world, and the world in general, that something like the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich is no longer the least bit surprising. Not that it’s unremarkable in any way: this gleaming twin-towered colossus of a hotel is said by many visitors to count among a small handful of the world’s finest (and most extravagant) hotels. But where else but Guangzhou would you expect to find such a place?

And while too much consistency often breeds boredom — see most corporate hotel chains for an illustration — the Sofitel group’s stylistic consistency feels more like a family resemblance than a carbon copy. The only given is that it’s going to mix Parisian grandeur with the most elevated possible version of the local interiors style, and that’s certainly true here. Rooms are almost excessively well-appointed, and the suites are positively palatial, all furnished with photos of Parisian cityscapes to match the real-life Guangzhou views at the windows.

As for the facilities and services, this Sofitel comes with the standard suite: swanky restaurants, L’Occitane spa, high-tech gym, and copious events space. As well it should. Given the current vogue in China for all things European, it’s hard not to envision the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich remaining at the top of this town’s heap for quite some time.
