Maybe we’re not entirely impartial, but to our eye, one of the best luxury hotel chains operating in America happens to be a French one. And where better for a Sofitel than Philadelphia’s up-and-coming French Quarter, in the old stock exchange building, a modern-era high-rise tower that’s a modernist exception in a traditionally Georgian and Federal city.
Inside it looks neither overtly French nor terribly modern — it’s equal parts Pennsylvania-inspired Shaker austerity and classic grand-hotel luxury, with plenty of granite, marble, and rich woodwork. In the rooms are just a few nods to minimalism, including overstuffed beds clad all in white, and bathrooms standing behind translucent shoji doors.
The whole thing is incredibly business-friendly, high-speed (wired) internet, and reasonable work desks. But leisure travelers aren’t left out in the cold either — aside from Chez Colette, the French brasserie, you’ll have all the benefits of a location just off Walnut Street, close to Rittenhouse Square and convenient to much of the city’s best shopping, dining, culture and nightlife. Start in La Bourse, the lobby lounge, a popular after-work destination, and branch out from there — Philadelphia’s downtown is compact, walkable, and, these days, quite safe.
