On the outside, with its cheery pink brick facade, the SoHo Grand resembles a brand-new shopping complex. But inside is a different story. Cast iron dogs stand guard at industrial design central — square lights, molded concrete walls, a coffee table the size of a grand piano. There's mesh wire glass everywhere, including on the writing desks in the rooms. The floors are the same stuff you see on New York sidewalks — corrugated steel for the elevators, and cast iron and glass for the stairs.

When it opened in 1996, the Grand was the first big SoHo hotel, and its downtown location has continued to be a major factor in its identity. Take the concierges, who can get you a reservation at the hottest underground restaurant and fill you in on the hippest goings-on. Here's where you'll find Tokyo urbanites in platforms, tough-talking London businessmen on their cells, lanky Nigerian models, many rock and roll musicians, and a lot of crazy hair.

It's easy for that much hipness to be intimidating, but the Grand, despite its name, is warm and happy. Maybe it's the pet friendly atmosphere — Fifi can munch on a biscuit at the bar while you drink your Tartini and you can even borrow a goldfish to keep you company through those long Manhattan nights. Or perhaps the fact that while it's undisputedly cool, the Grand is also curiously reminiscent of dormitory days, with its reupholstered sofas and signature dish of macaroni and cheese at the restaurant, Upstairs at The Grand.

Kids:

Guests over the age of 18 are considered adults. Some rooms accommodate 3 or more. The "Grand Corner King" room sleeps up to 3 guests. For crib/cot, must book "All room types fit cribs" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "Grand Corner King" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "None" room or larger. Connecting rooms available. Can be confirmed upon reservation.

Cribs are available and may be subject to an additional fee. Roll-away beds available and may be subject to an additional fee. No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.

Babysitting services provided by screened outside help at US$20 per hour. The restaurant is kid-friendly with high chairs. Our Concierge service has a large kids' guide for our area of New York City

Emergency amenities include Diaper Pails and Special Kids' Bath and Shower Amenities.

location. location. location. Concierge was also helpful.

What the hotel could do better

Between business appointments, I was forced to dine in the hotel (defies logic normally in the city). Unfortunately it was punctuated by slow and inaccurate service. Some guests on my floor seemed to think smoking was OK, too, which was unfortunate.

Great location. Comfortable bed. Nice bath amenities.

What the hotel could do better

The service. The decor. The staff. The public spaces. The attitude. The hotel is not that nice, the room is nothing special and the staff is pretentious and unaccommodating. The lobby turns into a club at night - not something we were expecting - and it's a challenge to get to your own room. There was a long wait for EVERYTHING - we were on hold for room service for 15 minutes once. When we mentioned this at check-out, the woman just said, "yeah, we were pretty full this weekend but we appreciate your patience." If you KNOW you're going to be full, staff up...I'm not paying nearly $400/night to be told you're fully booked. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.

The public spaces are architecturally lovely. The concierge was very helpful.

What the hotel could do better

Very expensive. The brown decor in the rooms and corridors. The fan/cooler in the room smelled.
