St Martins Lane was the first Ian Schrager/Philippe Starck collaboration on English shores, moving into Covent Garden a few months ahead of its younger sister, Soho’s Sanderson. The concept (at both hotels) is Urban Resort, and there’s no question guests walk into a different world upon entering, a world furnished with golden tooth-shaped seats, life-size chess pieces and hanging bare lightbulbs. Starck’s trademark irreverence may not look as novel as it did a few years ago, but it certainly sets a tone, quite a contrast to the English urban-country-house norm.

Rooms are loft-style, open-plan, with a custom-designed lighting system allowing guests to set the mood with light in any color of the spectrum, emanating almost magically from a projector behind the headboard, an arrangement that makes use of the blank canvas provided by the rooms’ all-white color scheme. Windows are floor-to-ceiling, allowing for impressive views of central London—one of the benefits of retrofitting a Sixties office block rather than some Georgian landmark. As in any loft-style building, corner rooms will see the most light, and while at many hotels the “garden rooms” are those with inferior views, here it means something different; an outdoor patio with a touch of greenery provides a breath of fresh air.

A Schrager hotel without a chic and in-demand restaurant would be unthinkable—this one has the tried-and-true Asia de Cuba. The Starck-designed Rum Bar and Light Bar round out the social life, which draws at least as many locals as guests. St Martins Lane lacks one thing the Sanderson has, which is a spa; then again this location is a shopper’s paradise—in choosing between the two, the key, ultimately, is: Covent Garden or Soho?

Kids:

Guests over the age of 12 are considered adults. Some rooms accommodate 3 or more. The "Deluxe Double/Double" room sleeps up to 4 guests. For crib/cot, must book "Deluxe King" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "Deluxe King" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "Deluxe Double/Double" room or larger. Connecting rooms available. Can be confirmed upon reservation.

Cribs are available and may be subject to an additional fee. Roll-away beds available for an additional fee of GB£30.00. No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.

There are no babysitting or daycare services available. The restaurant is kid-friendly with high chairs and a kids menu. Room service offers a kids menu.

The hotel is great and last time we stayed we had a wonderful time in a room with a patio garden - so we rebooked. The Asia de Cuba restaurant is very good.

The Korres bathroom products are good.

What the hotel could do better

We asked for a quiet room and were given a very noisy room overlooking an alley way. AND the people next door had a loud party ALL night so we didn't sleep at all! I had to bang loudly on their door at 4.30am! just to be heard and told them to stop the party! which then took ages to break up! Worst night ever in a London hotel! :-(

I've stayed at St. Martin's Lane numerous times over the years. This last visit perhaps might be my last. The staff are very helpful. I usually get a quiet room towards the back on a corner, and they remember me when I come back. Room service is great, I love the lobby bar and the restaurant.

What the hotel could do better

Rooms/hallways are showing lots of wear and tear. The new addition of Bungalow 8 makes the lobby a nightmare most nights. TV did not work. Internet did not work, in some rooms you are out of range of their wireless network so I had to move rooms.

Lovely bed and bedding. Everything in room working fine after I'd been moved because the heating wasn't working in my original room.

What the hotel could do better

As with all "hip" hotels after a few years they age and by God this one certainly is. It's very tired and is in desperate need of some TLC.

Housekeeping seem to have an allergy against supplying shampoo as there was none in either of my rooms and I had to ask for it.

I thought I'd try this hotel instead of my usual Covent Garden Hotel but I won't be going back again.
