This is not your everyday tropical island getaway. The uniqueness of Stonefield Estate Resort stems from its location in the hills high above Soufrière, at the foot of St. Lucia’s landmark Petit Piton. It’s a five-minute shuttle ride to the beach at the Jalousie Hilton, if that’s what you’re after, but it’s the view from Stonefield’s vantage that’s truly special.
Built on the grounds of an old plantation house, Stonefield has that kind of patinated charm that’s impossible to fake; the cottages are stocked with hand-crafted furnishings, and few intrusive modern conveniences — there’s no air conditioning (it’s not needed) and phones and televisions are largely absent. The villas do, however, have astonishing views of Petit Piton, and some have ocean views to boot. Full kitchens are standard, as are verandas, and the most extravagant accommodations come with outdoor showers and private pools.
The resort’s social life centers around the pool terrace, with its far-ranging views. Here you’ll find the Mango Tree restaurant, a local favorite, and the Bamboo Bar, serving cocktails against the backdrop of the Caribbean sunset. Water sports, nature walks, even Piton climbing expeditions can be arranged, and the hotel shuttle runs not only down to the beach but to the town of Soufrière as well — but when you want to be alone, there are few places in the Caribbean more private than Stonefield’s cottages.
Children under the age of 4 are not allowed at the resort.

What I liked:
The setting is spectacular, friendly and accommodating staff, excellent food. Small and quiet, other guests very nice. Perfect place to relax in beautiful surroundings.
What the hotel could do better:
Bathroom in my villa could use some updating, but it was perfectly fine. Otherwise, everything was great.

What I liked:
Private and quiet. Individual villas with private pools and amazing sea views. Unhurried atmosphere and relatively small number of total guests meaning no rush on the restaurant for dinner and the staff knows who you are.
What the hotel could do better:
There seemed to be a slight service issue on the night the resort manager was off. Most of the staff were excellent, but a couple could have used a little more customer service training. Also, a little more variety at breakfast (included) would have been good.
