This is not your everyday tropical island getaway. The uniqueness of Stonefield Estate Villa Resort stems from its location in the hills high above Soufrière, at the foot of St. Lucia’s landmark Petit Piton. It’s a five-minute shuttle ride to the beach at the Jalousie Hilton, if that’s what you’re after, but it’s the view from Stonefield’s vantage that’s truly special.
Built on the grounds of an old plantation house, Stonefield has that kind of patinated charm that’s impossible to fake; the cottages are stocked with hand-crafted furnishings, and few intrusive modern conveniences — there’s no air conditioning (it’s not needed) and phones and televisions are largely absent. The villas do, however, have astonishing views of Petit Piton, and some have ocean views to boot. Full kitchens are standard, as are verandas, and the most extravagant accommodations come with outdoor showers and private pools.
The resort’s social life centers around the pool terrace, with its far-ranging views. Here you’ll find the Mango Tree restaurant, a local favorite, and the Bamboo Bar, serving cocktails against the backdrop of the Caribbean sunset. Water sports, nature walks, even Piton climbing expeditions can be arranged, and the hotel shuttle runs not only down to the beach but to the town of Soufrière as well — but when you want to be alone, there are few places in the Caribbean more private than Stonefield’s cottages.
