The rest of the world may be heating up, and places like the Maldives may be slowly sinking into the ocean — but you’ll always have Norway. And if it’s a comfortably cool rural idyll you’re looking for, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than the Storfjorden, on the west coast, where the Storfjord Hotel sits surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodland.

It’s constructed in the traditional lafta style, with whole timbers, and the interiors are ruggedly elegant, furnished with antiques and classic Norwegian furnishings. Of course it’s not only the interiors you’re here to see, but the landscape as well, and each of the bedrooms has a balcony looking out over the fjord and the surrounding mountains. It’s not excessively opulent luxury of the presidential-suite variety, but neither is it at all rough.

Summers here are remarkably mild, though occasionally rainy; winters are pretty much what you’d expect Norway to be, and if it’s snow sports you’re after you’ve come to the right place. Tours and excursions are available in all seasons, and while there’s not exactly a wealth of restaurants nearby, the Storfjord’s dining room serves a three-course dinner nightly.

Though about as remote as can be, the Storfjord is in actual fact only forty minutes’ drive from Ålesund, a fair-sized city with a proper commercial airport, served by regular flights from London, Oslo and Copenhagen as well as Trondheim and Riga, Latvia.

How to get there:

Storfjord Hotel is approximately a 40 minute drive from Aalesund Airport. Aalesund Airport is a 45 minute flight from Oslo. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
