Temple Tree at Bon Ton

Pantai Cenang

Langkawi, Malaysia

Style: Contemporary Classic

Atmosphere: Quiet

8 Rooms

Originally, Bon Ton was a fairly typical Malay villa resort; a lush little parcel of land near the beach on Langkawi island, furnished with ten classic century-old villas in the indigenous style. So far, so good. It’s when it came time to expand, however, that true inspiration struck. Instead of building another set of villas from scratch, the proprietors found some more, in a variety of styles, Chinese, Malay and colonial, and moved them from their original locations, dismantling them piece by piece and painstakingly rebuilding them here, at Temple Tree.

The result is more like an eclectic little neighborhood than an ordinary villa resort. There’s a size available for more or less any taste — some houses are divided into up to four or five rooms, others split into pairs of suites, and the little Black & White House is a self-contained unit. Each one is uniquely decorated in a style that blends authentic architecture and contemporary interior design, and none of them lack for personality, to say the absolute least.

And it’s got more going for it than just a great personality. The cooking is inspired, which is not at all a certainty in this sort of place. And just when it couldn’t get any more charming, there’s another side to Bon Ton that sets it at about a 90-degree angle to the villa-resort norm — the owners operate an animal sanctuary on an adjacent plot of land, and their charges have the run of both properties.

How to get there:
