Seldom have nature and high tech come together so flawlessly. Camouflaged amidst jaw-dropping 12 million year old rock configurations silhouetted against the Arizona desert sky, Boulders is a hippie camp gone super-luxe. It's for those with a burning desire to commune with the desert and spirits of the Native Americans, but who can't let go of their Gucci glasses or their stocked wine cellars.

Casitas are shadowy adobe structures that seem to be carved out of the rocks themselves. The interiors mirror the desert's soft, endless slopes — wooden beamed floors, shapeless leather sofas, whitewashed walls and fireplaces with rounded corners, and terracotta tiles the color of sand. There are even cacti scattered about to make the illusion complete. At night, the jackals and owls sing you to sleep. And don't be surprised to find a desert wren or a chameleon perched on your towel rack.

Boulders is suited to the active and the lazy alike. The sedentary can lounge outside drinking margaritas and listening out for the occasional bird call. For the more actively inclined, there are heavy-duty aerobics classes, yoga, tennis, riding, golf, and rock climbing. Warning, it can get pretty hot here — Arizona in the summer is ninety-plus if you're lucky, over a hundred on average. Rooms are air-conditioned, but outside is a different story. Golfers have it easy, as their carts are equipped with misting sprays. For the rest of you, we can only recommend that you hydrate. But no matter what your activities during the day, the new Golden Door spa is a necessary stop at the end of it.

There is an unmistakable New Age aura about the Boulders so if communing, chakras, and crystals give you a headache, you might want to give it a miss. But rest assured that every aspect at the Boulders—whether it's the Frette sheets on your bed, the ostrich steak on the menu, or the Vichy shower in the spa—is top-notch. For the ultimate Boulders experience, you must take a night hike. Equipped with the $2,500 night-glasses you will get a unique insight into the desert's nightlife and at that moment, you will truly feel one with nature.

How to get there:

The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa is approximately a 50 minute drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
