To put it a little simply, British Columbia is to the rest of Canada more or less what California is to the United States. For the most part, though, the laid-back West Coast side of Vancouver’s personality hasn’t been all that well represented in its hotel scene. The Burrard, though, is in a unique position to do something about that: this modernist motor inn opened in 1956, and now that the Fifties aesthetic is back with a vengeance, so’s the hotel.

With its sunny modernist-inspired décor and its classic mid-century furniture, it’s a bit like Vancouver viewed through a Palm Springs–colored lens. For every retro touch, though, there’s something contemporary to balance it, like a 42-inch HDTV or an iPod docking stereo. And here that much-vaunted mellow West Coast friendliness is very much the order of the day.

The location is as central as it gets, and that’s important, as the Burrard is more pied à terre than pleasure palace. Fortunately downtown isn’t short of dining, drinking or shopping options, and the hotel’s fleet of loaner bikes is on hand for wider explorations — a ride down the seawall, for example, is a Vancouver rite of passage.
