Finally a break from the Tuscan-Provençal style that seems to dominate the California wine country. Carneros Inn, at the south end of Napa, close to San Francisco, is rather more modern, its style a sort of rustic minimalism, its inspiration seemingly drawn not from Europe but from the American Midwest and Northeast.
It’s the buildings that people tend to either love or hate about Carneros. The corrugated metal roofs of the cottages are striking and unassuming at the same time, and fit well into the landscape of rolling hills and wide-open farmland. Once inside, though, it’s difficult to find fault — while not as over-the-top as some wine country accommodations, the cottages are simple, tasteful, and more than luxurious enough, with the full range of modern electronics, splendid indoor-outdoor showers, and private garden patios, complete with gas heaters for cool California nights.
Add to this a long outdoor pool with an idyllic view of the vineyards, a spa to compete with any in the wine country, and Farm, a restaurant serving locally sourced California cuisine, and it’s clear Carneros is a contender. There’s no accounting for taste, of course, but if you’re not afraid of modern architecture, you’ll find nothing at all to complain about here.

What I liked:
Great pool. Really enjoyed the boot camp class offered through the spa. Overall, wonderful stay.
What the hotel could do better:
From the outside, the cabins are charming. Inside, they sort of lack personality. Ours was rather nondescript, small and dark. However, the bathroom was lovely.

What I liked:
Carneros is a gorgeous property. I was a little nervous from some reviews that the houses would feel very sterile or cold, but I found the design warm and lovely. The interior of the cottage was just gorgeous, and complete with one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept on. Extremely romantic environment without feeling pressured to be romantic. It is, indeed, a windy spot in the valley (we had several glasses get knocked over by the wind when sitting at the hottub), but we still loved it here. The view from the hilltop pool is spectacular. 24 hour pool + hottub + fire was a huge plus for us night owls. Loved the location close to sonoma and napa but not right downtown. Can't wait to come back.
What the hotel could do better:
Would have loved better hours for food + drink. My boyfriend tried to dine in FARM on a Tuesday night around 9 and was told only the bar menu was available (we have no idea why this was as we went on Thursday for dinner and it was packed with a full menu...I think perhaps they didn't have enough guests staying on Tuesday so they weren't doing full dinner service? Unclear). We thought it was bizarre that the hilltop bar service closed at 7 p.m. Several nights, we would be sitting in the hottub chatting with other guests and enjoying wine or cocktails only to find out it was last call. We never understood this as we would have happily paid for a glass of wine later in the evening as we enjoyed the hot tub. They also need a much bigger hot tub! It really only seats 4 and for such a large resort (especially so windy) it's size was baffling.

What I liked:
They get the little things right, the things that make you forget you're staying at a hotel, and make you feel like you're at home. Quiet and beautiful.
What the hotel could do better:
Would have been great to have an ergometer at the fitness center, but then, I'm insane.
