Golf may be the Coeur d’Alene’s primary raison d’être, but this lakeside resort at the northern edge of Idaho draws crowds from all over the American northwest as well as western Canada in search of a temperate summer getaway or a picturesque winter ski holiday. The lake is the focus here: the hotel stands at the water’s edge, many of its guest rooms looking out over the alpine panorama, and even the famous links make use of the lake — the 14th green floats on the lake’s surface, reachable only by boat.
Rooms vary: the west-facing deluxe rooms in the tower wing offer vertiginous views down onto the lake surface, while the “traditional” rooms look at nothing in particular — really suitable only for those on a tight budget. The better the view, the more handsome the décor as well; the premier rooms come with flat-screen televisions and simple contemporary furnishings to complement the stunning lake views.
Golf facilities are among the Northwest’s finest, though the recreation options hardly end there. A 30,000-square-foot spa and fitness center will keep non-golfers in tip-top condition, and the lake offers a number of options as well, including boat rentals and cruises. The surrounding Rockies offer endless opportunities for skiing, hiking, rafting and more, and at the end of the day the Coeur d’Alene’s restaurants serve everything from five-star fine dining to casual bar & grill fare.
