The College Hotel
Roelof Hartstraat 1
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Lively
40 Rooms
One of Amsterdam’s most stylish hotels happens to be a student operation—the College Hotel, occupying a converted historic school building at the edge of the Museumplein, is managed by the Barcelona-based Franklyn luxury group, but owned by Amsterdam’s Hotel Academy, and staffed largely with hospitality students. Rates are set accordingly, to encourage patience with the eager yet unpolished service, and the result is one of the best hotel values in the city.
Though Dutch design is justifiably famous, Amsterdam’s hotel interiors lean to the stodgy and antique, which makes the College Hotel all the more surprising. These spaces are thoroughly modern, and in a posh and comfortable style recalling many of London’s cozier boutiques, as opposed to the more stark and rarefied look one expects from a Continental design hotel. Flat-screen televisions and wireless internet are standard, and bathrooms are modern, with the obligatory rain shower and supplied bathrobes.
Another English boutique commonplace that’s new to Amsterdam is the notion of the hip hotel bar—the College Hotel’s lounge is one of the few that can honestly boast a mix of guests and locals, and a rather stunning environment, all black lacquer beneath soaring ceilings. The restaurant is impressive as well, serving forward-looking Dutch cuisine in what was once the school gym, now a bright white open-plan space with a view into the kitchen.
The location is superb as well, at the edge of the museum district, with easy access to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, as well as the designer shops of PC Hoofdstraat and the hipster-friendly De Pijp neighborhood. A stylish and lively alternative to the historic houses of the canal district, this place would be impressive enough at any price—its student status and correspondingly modest rates make it all the more so.
