We’re not what you’d call believers in the star system, by which hotels are categorized according to a checklist of services and amenities. However we can’t help but smile at the sheer audacity of a hotel that claims more than five. One of just a handful of six-star hotels in the world is the Empire, the top hotel in the minuscule yet oil-rich sultanate of Brunei.

Here in the capital city of Bandar is a hotel that is truly and delightfully excessive, a gleaming white palace, once the royal guesthouse, facing out over the South China Sea, surrounded by manicured gardens and man-made lagoons.

The lobby is a fantasy in white marble and gold, and the rooms are only slightly less opulent, vast, at least sixty square meters, with spectacular sea views from outdoor terraces and even from the glittering marble bathrooms. As you’d expect from a six-star hotel, every conceivable service is provided, and the facilities are beyond comprehensive, from the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course to beach-front water sports and a kids’ water park and even a full-sized movie theater. A half-dozen restaurants and lounges serve every variety of Asian and international cuisines.

English-style afternoon is served in the Lobby Lounge, but when it comes to alcohol, you’ll have to take advantage of your liberal duty-free allowance, or else make the twenty-minute drive to the Malaysian border.

And while we’re loosely on the subject, a footnote — we really shouldn’t be the ones to have to tell you this, but it’s worth mentioning that Brunei is one of those places where drug possession is punishable by death so please, unless you’re interested in ending life as a headline in the World section of your home country’s newspaper, don’t even begin to think about it.
