It’s never easy to let go of a comfortable old idea. We’ve gone on and on in these pages over the years about what a conservative lot Paris’s hotels are. The point was beginning to stretch a bit already, but now, on the occasion of the opening of the Five Hotel, it’s time to retire that old line for good. Because if enough new places like the Five open up, we’ll have to start droning on about how surprising, how whimsical, how visually modern the hotels in Paris always are, and couldn’t someone just put in a Louis XV chair or a crystal chandelier or something, to give us a break from all this design?

We’re not quite to that point yet. Which is a good thing, as it just means there’s still good reason to be excited about the Five. It’s still not every day you see a hotel painted in solid vivid colors like this, walls gleaming with the texture of Chinese lacquer, tiny pinhole stars floating up the walls and onto the ceiling. Fixtures and furnishings are simple and contemporary, some rooms featuring platform-style beds suspended from the ceiling — watch those hanging wires. And all of the rooms, though minimal, come with the basics, like satellite LCD televisions and high-speed wireless internet access. Beyond breakfast, you’re on your own, but this being Paris, you know the drill — if you can’t find something to eat around the Latin Quarter then there’s no hope for you.

Kids:

Guests over the age of 12 are considered adults. The "SUITE" room sleeps up to 2 guests. For crib/cot, must book "NO" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "NO" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "SUITE" room or larger.

No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.

There are no babysitting or daycare services available.

The staff was very good, and made up for the other shortcomings of the hotel.

What the hotel could do better

Room size was small, even by French standards. The morning breakfast service was mediocre.

The soap kit provided in the bathroom was of good quality.

What the hotel could do better

1 The hotel is the size of a matchbox. The photos are very misleading. In order to provide a more realistic idea of how small this hotel is, I'll compare it with an example of another Tablet hotel: The Mayfair Hotel London.

The reception & lobby of the Five (which only consists of 2 chairs & a table), are the size of 1 Mayfair Hotel bedroom. The size of our room at the Five (with the tablet plus upgrade!), was the size of the bathroom in the Mayfair Hotel. & the size of our bathroom at the Five, was only slightly larger than the shower in the Mayfair Hotel.

My partner & I had 2 small items of carry-on luggage. These did not fit in the room, so we kept 1 inside the cupboard & another on the small table.

The room was literally only big enough for a double bed & tight walking space around it.

2 The mattress on the bed was in fact 2 mattresses! 2 single mattresses had been pushed together onto the double size bed. These would move apart very easily, leaving a constant gap in the middle of the bed which we kept falling into. For anyone who might ever move in their sleep, or for couples sleeping close to each other, this will be a very serious problem!

3 The breakfast was completely inadequate to any 5 star standards. The fact that Paris is the land of excellent bakeries & superb cheese, makes their breakfast seem even more of a joke.

4 The area around the reception & elevator smells like sewage. A very bad attempt had clearly been made to mask this smell with sickeningly overpowering scented oils and candles.

5 If you decide to escape into the city, it is a good 20-30 minute walk to anywhere exciting in Paris. Which means it's location is considered average.

6 Overall, for the star rating and the price we paid, it was an extremely & utterly disappointing stay.

After having had a number of excellent experiences with the standards of Tablethotels, this is indeed a very disappointing.

I would rate this hotel nothing above 3 stars.

What the hotel could do better

Small rooms (of course) and claustrophobic breakfast room.

Some of the receptionists had very good suggestions for places to eat as well as feasibility for travel options when we encountered problems with the Metro (due to their technical difficulties). Free WiFi was available, and as we didn't bring a laptop, they had one which we were able to use for no charge. In-room breakfast was very good and a good deal with respect to the charge for the normal continental breakfast.

What the hotel could do better

Rooms were very spartan (though chic), which was alright and expected, though could have made better use of storage space and other options. Continental breakfast was slightly pricy, though in-room service excellent for only a fraction of the cost more. Lighting could have been better. Great variety of television channels, though not many which were of interest to us (other clients may have a different opinion).

Rooms were small but very relaxing.

    Loved the shower's LED lights.

    Good location.

    Very friendly staff.

Hotel is small but perfectly formed.

What the hotel could do better

Was supposed to get an upgrade as part of the Tablet package if available - which it was not - but still couldn't deny the great value.

No wardrobe in room (there was a coat hanger and some shelves).

Service was particularly charming. Complimentary champagne was a lovely touch. The room, while small, was well designed and furnished with wonderful little touches such as scented lamps. Great value for money.

What the hotel could do better

Room was small, but that's to be expected in Paris.
