The Frangipani Tree
812 Matara Road, Thalpe
Galle, Sri Lanka
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
10 Rooms
Most of what makes southern Sri Lanka such a magical place to visit has to do with the conjunction of the climate, the landscape, the culture, the sea. But more than a little bit of it seems to come down to the architecture. Take a look at the best small hotels in the region, and in most cases you’ll find they were designed by Geoffrey Bawa or by his student Channa Daswatte — and the Frangipani Tree, a Daswatte design, is no different.
Where this one differs from the others is in the location: not in the old town of Galle Fort but a few miles to the south, on Thalpe Bay. Intimacy is the name of the game here, and with just ten suites spread among four villas, in a placid seaside location, it’s certainly that. The style is vintage Daswatte, modernist, minimal, but clearly motivated, a discernibly Sri Lankan version on the minimalist boutique hotel.
As for attractions they’re simple but compelling: it all essentially boils down to a bit of quiet by the sea. Water sports and tours around Galle Fort are likely candidates for active guests, but a day spent lounging poolside, followed by dinner with a view of the sea, is the likeliest itinerary.
