Football fans may know Istanbul’s Galatasaray district as the home of one of the world’s most intimidating sporting venues. From a hospitality perspective, however, this district could scarcely be more welcoming — especially now that the owners of the locally based House café concern have expanded into the guest-house business, with the twenty-suite mansion-style House Hotel Galatasaray.
We say “mansion-style” rather than simply “mansion” because, for all the splendor of this impeccably preserved old building, the House stops well short of the extreme high end. It’s indulgent, sure, but not extravagant. The fixtures are classic, the furnishings are modern, and the suites are more than spacious enough, but the overall impression is more one of swanky urban apartment living than seven-star pleasure-palace opulence.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Moderation was one of the ancient Greek virtues and with any luck it’ll be one of the modern Turkish ones as well. To that end there’s a restaurant — Home knows restaurants, you recall — which pulls double duty as a cocktail lounge, and is more the all-day “coffee, turning to drinks, supplemented by a quick bite” sort of place. Which, for a stylish, well-located and realistically priced hotel, is miles more practical than white-tablecloth fine dining, isn’t it?

What I liked:
great location, beautifully designed rooms (except for having a shower pod in the bedroom)
What the hotel could do better:
the room was great except for 3 things:
- the couch: looked great but I was unable to sit on it as it is the most uncomfortable couch I've ever sat on, thus had to sit on the bed & was unable to use the sitting room
- the shower "pod" is in the bedroom
- no outlets next to the desk or bed

What I liked:
Great location for young istanbul and getting away from the bustle; great team working at the hotel; rooms were all the photos promised in terms of size and design; breakfast was a pleasure
What the hotel could do better:
Had a room on the ground floor, which was let down by the fact I could hear reception noise through the early morning and day; the hotel could do with a more lively bar; front of house OK-good with recommendations, which could have been a little more researched
