The Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa
1075 California Street
San Francisco, CA, USA
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Quiet
135 Rooms
The Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins, both classic hotels (and tourist attractions) in their own right, sit just a block away — but for a quiet, classic elegance and a taste of old-world San Francisco there’s nothing like the Huntington Hotel. Atop Nob Hill, the Huntington is ideally situated for commanding views of the Bay, the downtown skyline, and the surrounding architectural wonders — Grace Cathedral, the Flood Mansion, and Huntington Park.
It’s little exaggeration to say that stepping into the Huntington one feels transported to bygone era. Guest rooms are packed with antique furnishings and plush fabrics, each one individually decorated by one of a number of designers. Spaces are generous and walls are thick, owing to the hotel’s heritage as a luxury apartment house, and the suites are positively sprawling and opulent.
Just off the lobby is the Big Four restaurant, named for Nob Hill’s original aristocracy, the railroad barons Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins and C.P. Huntington himself. It’s no stretch to imagine the likes of the Big Four dining here, surrounded by mahogany-paneled walls and emerald-green leather banquettes. It’s one of San Francisco’s top restaurants, with a wine list to match. And on the other side of the lobby, a surprise; the Nob Hill Spa is as modern as can be, a minimalist setting for a vast array of health and beauty treatments.
The Huntington is a short (but steep!) walk from the theatre district, Union Square and the financial district, and is just off both of the remaining cable car lines, offering easy access to Fisherman’s Wharf, Little Italy and North Beach.

I Liked
Good location, tasty Cable Car cocktails in the bar.
What the hotel could do better
The staff were something to be desired: the receptionist was frosty and unwelcoming, the bellboy/doorman was snooty and sarcastic and the restaurant manager was unhelpful and rude. The Big Four restaurant was so dark you couldn't see what you were eating - even the barman admitted to having to use a flashlight to find a $20 note a customer dropped on the floor.

Good price for area.
What the hotel could do better
Bit old. In need of a revamp. And under-staffed. Aside from the concierge - who was rarely availabe - no-one had any local info.

I Liked
My initial reception was great, friendly greeting upon arriving and the desk clerk was aware and accomodating of my preference for a quiet room. The corner room was very large and comfortable.
What the hotel could do better
During my stay, some of the staff hanging around the entrance were distant to the point that I walked down the street to catch a cab.
Not sure why there was no minibar? There was the fridge that looked like it used to be stocked, but no longer.
The room was a bit tired around the edges.

I Liked
Attentive service by all staff, atmospheric bar and restaurant (delicious, perfect service), wonderful Nob Hill location with easy cable car access.
What the hotel could do better
Unusually shaped room, smaller than we envisioned (large plasma TV mounted on the wall diagonal to the bed?) but in retrospect, and after talking to guests who paid TWICE our rate, we were fine with it. Great bath, but needed more counter space for toiletries.

Review
We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. Two issues detracted from the stay, causing me to rate "good" rather than "excellent"; There was a large stain in the carpet of our room. It was most unexpected in such a quality establishment. The second is a suggestion for improved customer service. A Bodum/Cafetierre in the room's kitchen facility together with some quality coffee, a kettle, cutlery and crockery would have been appreciated by this jet-lagged insomniac.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
