There’s not a lot of the old world left in the Caribbean. We’ve nothing against the egalitarian spirit, but there’s something to be said for the tony old establishments. It’s not exclusivity we’re after — terrible word, that — but personality, character, uniqueness. That’s something that’s hard to build from scratch. Better to start with a place that’s got it in spades, like the Inn at English Harbour.

The unique geography of the place — a deep protected bay ringed by cliffs and dense forest — once made this an ideal way station for the Royal Navy. Hence the name. Now the boats are for pleasure, and the beach is for the holidaymakers. And just behind that beach is the Inn.

It’s tiny — just twenty-eight rooms, suites and cabanas — and while the style remains utterly authentic, the worn edges of the place have been polished clean. Catch the right view, especially in the gorgeous colonial-style suites, and it’s easy to imagine you’ve traveled back in time a century or two.

Two restaurants and a small spa are more than enough for the Inn’s small clientele. Two tennis courts are lit for night play, and of course the bay means this is still the perfect launch site for all manner of aquatic expeditions. There are bigger, swankier, more modern hotels in the Leeward Islands, of course — but who cares?
