For all the storied nightlife and high-end shopping in downtown Manhattan’s Tribeca district, there’s historically been a paucity of comparably stylish lodgings. That was then, as they say; this is now. The James is one of several design-conscious, nightlife-oriented boutique hotels in this corner of the city, and while it’s probably more Gotham classic than downtown scene kid, it sets itself apart with a couple of flourishes.
One is an attention to fashion, visible before you even enter the hotel: the doormen’s uniforms include a smart yet flamboyant sheepskin coat with a slightly rumpled top hat, and the rest of the staff is similarly boldly attired. Not a bad move for a hotel that aims for a segment of the fashion trade. And second is the bar, Jimmy, which, though it’s modeled on a sort of idealized English pub, boasts a location like no pub we’ve seen — it opens onto the roof terrace, with its little plunge pool and its panoramic view of the Hudson and the downtown skyline.
The rooms are smallish by the standard of some other cities, but quite in line with the New York norm. An uncluttered and tightly composed look keeps them from feeling busy or cluttered, and here, as well, it’s the details that count, things like rain showers and impossibly high-end linens.
Meanwhile downstairs David Burke proves the days of hotel restaurants as afterthoughts are over. The thoughtfully designed space mixes city and country motifs, and it’s clear no less time went into planning the menu — hearty American classics with a side of whimsy.

What I liked:
This was my second stay at The James. It offers a consistently highly level of (very warm and friendly) service and the rooms are light filled, well designed and have the most comfortably hotel beds I've ever encountered. The rooftop bar Jimmy is fun, and there's great food and atmosphere in the Treehouse (part of the David Burke Kitchen). Also, my room service breakfast (something I'm normally gun shy about after many disastrous experiences in other luxury hotels) was perfectly cooked! Highly, highly recommend The James.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay!
