In Virginia, history runs a bit deeper than elsewhere in America — and nowhere is this more apparent than in this Richmond classic. Designed by the architecture firm responsible for the New York public library, the Jefferson is every inch as monumental, from the Italian Renaissance exteriors to the faux-marble columns and grand red-carpeted marble staircase (think Gone With the Wind) in the rotunda, under a stained-glass skylight.

The hotel has been meticulously restored, in an effort to return it to its original glory. Now it’s hard to imagine it ever having fallen on hard times. The rooms and suites are as traditional as can be, with 18th-century reproduction furnishings and the occasional original fireplace, along with modern necessities like feather beds and Egyptian cotton sheets and high-speed internet access. Bathrooms are suitably grand as well, decked out in marble, with lighted shaving/makeup mirrors and acres of plush towels.

The fine dining restaurant is named for Etienne Lemaire, Thomas Jefferson’s maitre d’hotel, and is one of the top restaurants in the United States, serving an authentic Southern cuisine with European influences. TJ’s is slightly more laid-back, but it’s still no neighborhood greasy spoon — think Mediterranean and Asian specialties, along with fine wines and private label cigars. A Sunday champagne brunch is served in the rotunda, as is afternoon tea, a custom that has long since faded throughout most of America — except in places like the Jefferson.
