Don't be fooled by the slightly old-money country-club name, or by the building itself, which at over a hundred and ten years old is surely one of San Diego's oldest — the Keating is as of-the-moment as it's possible to be, utterly emblematic of the current fascination with high-design boutique hotels.
Interiors, incredibly, are by Pininfarina, the Italian studio responsible for designing Ferraris and Maseratis. And if the connection between sports cars and hotels is difficult to see, one look inside clears it up — the Keating is aspirational hotel design at its peak, its plasma-screens bigger, its sleek modernist furniture flashier, its Bang & Olufsen sound systems more banging and its open-plan glass-walled bathrooms more nakedly on display than any of the competition. These are the Maseratis of luxe-boutique hotel rooms, with all the options: in-room Lavazza espresso machines, high-end Dornbracht bathroom fixtures, and loft-style exposed brick walls.
The Keating's location, at the edge of the fashionable Gaslamp quarter, is perfect for the nightlife-fixated bachelor or bachelorette — though there's always the option of the hotel’s own Brick and Mortar restaurant, which by night turns into one of the neighborhood’s more popular party spots.
The Keating has a 2-night minimum-stay policy on Fridays and Saturdays.

What I liked:
The room was fantastic. Large, comfortable, light, interesting. Great Shower. Location was good not great but a really nice diversion for the convention hotels down the street.
What the hotel could do better:
The desk staff was inattentive. They were not rude, they were helpful if you got their attention. They just seemed lazy if it really came down to it.

What I liked:
Amazingly kind employees with great service. Modern decor and design. Great in-room amenities that can't be found anywhere (Bang & Olufsen tv and stereo, Lavazza espresso machine), high ceilings in rooms, and nice little touches like a nightly little dessert brought to the room.
What the hotel could do better:
Some space in the lobby to hang out and wait, or meet people, would be nice. But it's not like anything can be done about that since the space is what it is. Just unfortunate. Also, thirty two dollars for overnight parking per night is somewhat painful, but there's really no where else nearby to park. But it would be nice if that rate was discounted for hotel guests instead of higher for hotel guests.
