From the dizzying heights of its cliff-top hot tub to the depths of its trout-filled lakes and streams, the Lodge at Tarraleah artfully integrates luxury living with breathtaking wilderness. Situated on 300 unspoiled acres in the Tasmanian highlands, the lodge is a heady offering, complete with a private chef, butler service, and the opportunity to take advantage of helicopter tours, guided trout-fishing, and even fighter-plane excursions (yes, you read that correctly).

Guest rooms bring the spirit of the wild landscape inside — there’s a fitting vastness to the proceedings, with king beds draped in thick, silk-filled doonas (that’s duvets for non-Australians) and big, welcoming fireplaces. Spa baths practically beg to be enjoyed with a bottle of champagne. The décor doesn’t lean on rustic kitsch, but it does remind guests that Tasmania has a vibrant tradition of local craftsmanship. You can stay connected if you like, but it’s worth giving modernity the kiss-off in favor of exploring the grounds, where expert guides show off such local wildlife as platypus and wombats.

Evening back at the lodge offers its own diversions, with a selection of over 200 single malts and 300 wines to be enjoyed by the fire in the Library Bar. Guests prepare meals alongside experienced chefs in special behind-the-scenes cooking sessions, or simply relax and enjoy four-course, locally sourced meals in the Wildside dining room.

How to get there:
