The Lodge at Tikana

New Zealand lodge living doesn’t get much more exclusive, or much more intimate, than the one-suite Lodge at Tikana. You read that right — you’ll have this splendid South Island farmhouse all to yourself, with only your hosts Dave and Donna for company.

You’ve got the run of the place, from the espresso machine and the library full of books and DVDs to the double soaking tub with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Cozy doesn’t even begin to describe it — the floors are heated, and the living room features a wood-burning fireplace.

The refrigerator is stocked with drinks and snacks, but you’re not on your own — Donna will be along to discuss each day’s menu to cater to your individual tastes and dietary requirements. Suffice to say the local produce is as fresh as can be, and your tariff covers all your food and drink, from breakfast through dinner.

On-site activities are necessarily modest: there’s no end of walking to be done about the property, a deer and horse ranch, and there’s a grass tennis court for those of a sporting bent. For the more active, day trips can be arranged in cooperation with various Southland tour operators. Somehow they’ve even managed to figure out how to bring in professional therapists for spa treatments.

The Lodge at Tikana cannot accommodate guests younger than 13 years old.
