The Luang Say Residence
4-5 Ban Phonephang
Luang Prabang, Laos
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Quiet
24 Rooms
The Luang Say Residence has the air of a place that lived a thousand lives before becoming a luxury hotel, so it’s a credit to the architects and designers that this group of six pavilions was actually just constructed in 2010. The French Colonial style perfectly evokes the grandiloquence of an upscale Indochine residence, and the surrounding landscape offers a lush tropical garden refuge from the increasingly tourist-friendly city of Luang Prabang.
Twenty-four suites are divided among six freestanding pavilions spread across the property, connected by a walkway that spans a series of ponds dotted with lilies and palms. Balconies and large shared terraces provide mountain views, and while the high-altitude breezes captured by the open floor plans probably won’t make you forsake your air-conditioning, they will make an afternoon out on the balcony tolerable, even in this town’s sticky heat. The interiors are tasteful, furnished with drawing-room divans and king beds draped in white netting. Antique wooden writing desks are a welcome touch, and may force you to ignore the free wi-fi in favor of penning a long, thoughtful, handwritten letter to the folks back home.
In addition to the Belle Epoque restaurant, which serves seasonal local favorites, Luang Say Residence houses a sumptuous cocktail lounge, 1861. Besides appealing leather sofas and big, enveloping armchairs, 1861 offers a multitude of quirky local flavor, including the trophies of a hunting lodge, the books of a historical society, and the displays of a botanical museum.
