It’s about as far as you can get — both figuratively and literally — from the funky downtown boutique hotels of lower Manhattan. The Mark is the very picture of classic, timeless Upper East Side poshness, in spite of — or maybe even because of — its recent, extremely thorough renovation. And in its present incarnation it’s proof that old money doesn’t necessarily imply old-fashioned.
Take the Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges (yes, that Jean-Georges) as an example. It’s a long way from weak tea in the afternoon and lobster Thermidor at night. The menu could hold its own against anyone in the city, and the space is not at all unstylish, for any side of the park. And while the lobby’s dazzle is classic, decked out in Deco-flavored black and white, and the rooms are as subtle as can be, there’s a certain stylishness to the Mark’s elegance, which only sneaks up slowly.
The bottom line is that there’s nobody on the Upper East Side, however conventional, who’d feel that the the looks, the atmosphere, or the very traditional service at the Mark would be too forward-looking to take. And yet there are few downtown denizens, one imagines, who couldn’t see the elegant appeal of the place, should they find themselves this side of Midtown.

What the hotel could do better:
Wasn't overly impressed with the restaurant service. Was not bad, but was not exceptional either. Still had a wonderful stay!

What I liked:
The ensuite was absolutely beautiful...definitely a 5 star+ quality. All the details in that respect were thoughtfully designed and executed. The bedroom was huge, but extremely boring in comparison. It was clean, but looked like any 4 star hotel.
What the hotel could do better:
The service was slow. I went into the bar and the had a seat. It was a tiny hotel bar and the bartender could see everything from where he was standing but was too busy chatting up an employee that he never approached me for an order. After waiting over 30 minutes, I went back to the front desk very frustrated. It was incredibly hot and all I wanted was to take a shower and cool down. I would have waited in the bar, but after the poor service I was incredibly upset.
The front desk clerk, was very apologetic and she did her best. She was professional and very sympathetic, but I felt that the situation at the bar should have been corrected immediately. Other than that, the ladies at the desk were lovely.
The doorman was wonderful and extremely friendly. He was a definitely on my "exceeded" expectations list. He was just generally very welcoming and made my visit so pleasant.
