In London, the hotel world’s majorest of major leagues, even the big chains know which way the wind is blowing — away from that fusty manor-house look, and toward something altogether more clean-lined and contemporary. Nobody’s about to mistake the old May Fair for the Sanderson, but after a top-to-bottom £70m renovation, it’s looking shockingly up-to-date.

It’s plain they’ve learned some lessons from the new breed of design hotels: the Mayfair Bar is stylish and modern, packing in a hip West End crowd, and Amba, the restaurant, is striking in granite and black leather. Upstairs, the bedrooms are still oversized and as luxurious as they come, and now they’re utterly modern too, slightly minimalist in muted earth tones. And of course they’re packed with all the modern must-haves, from high-tech (Bang & Olufsen entertainment centers) to low (Molton Brown bath products).

A 201-seat private screening room is a rarity, to be sure, but the May Fair’s spa is its crown jewel. It’s vaguely Asian in design (as are all spas these days) and completely over-the-top — the best place for a mud bath after a long day of splashing cash all over the West End. Or all over the hotel — the May Fair’s own Palm Beach Casino is among the biggest in town, and its atmosphere of old-world glamour is an inducement to high-stakes playing.

Reasonable Value in an Excellent Location.

By David based in Galway

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Well appointed rooms. Reasonable Rates (considering location). Reasonably priced room service and mini-bar. Atmosphere in the Hotel Bar. Staff in the Hotel Bar (very busy with friday post-work crowd, yet still insisted on helping us find seats). Location!

Not 5 Stars

By Ste_chai based in San Francisco

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

Location was good, walking distance to restaurants, transportation and shopping.

I Disliked

The room we had lacked warmth and luxuriness that is associated with any 5 stars establishment. It was ackwardly designed with poorly laidout furniture. Water leaked from the shower door. Long dark halls and a plain lobby. I guess you get what you pay for. We got a very good rate, and in this case, we barely got what we paid for. I specifically did not appreciate the "too casual" young concierge trying to "upsale" me to take the hotel's limo to Heathrow.

I Liked

The suite we received due to Tablet plus was large, spacious and very at ease.

I Disliked

the bed, my partner wasn't the first one, who went down with the bed, so it was clearly not repaired after the last time. The manager in charge of the suite floor, who entered our room at 7 am because she thought the room was empty :-)

Love this HOTEL!

We stayed in London for only one day and therefore LOCATION is key. The hotel is extremely well-located, just a 5-min walk from the Green Park Metro Station, and is right in the best shopping district in town, the May Fair. You will find all the name brand shops as well as art galleries in the area. You can also walk to the Buckingham Palace and Covent Garden on foot. We arrived at the hotel at 8 am in the morning, and the staff was so kind to offer us a resting room to change, shower and put luggage. We really did not expect that, and it was a great surprise. The room is big for the London standard, and the gym is very well-equipped.

I Disliked

The WIFI service did not work that well in our room, but there is free online service at the business center and there is even a printer. It took them a long term to get our room ready in the afternoon because the customer of the previous night did not check out until 3 p.m. However, since they had given us the resting room in the morning, it was fine. At the end, we decided to stay at the resting room instead.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
