In London, the hotel world’s majorest of major leagues, even the big chains know which way the wind is blowing — away from that fusty manor-house look, and toward something altogether more clean-lined and contemporary. Nobody’s about to mistake the old May Fair for the Sanderson, but after a top-to-bottom £70m renovation, it’s looking shockingly up-to-date.
It’s plain they’ve learned some lessons from the new breed of design hotels: the Mayfair Bar is stylish and modern, packing in a hip West End crowd, and Amba, the restaurant, is striking in granite and black leather. Upstairs, the bedrooms are still oversized and as luxurious as they come, and now they’re utterly modern too, slightly minimalist in muted earth tones. And of course they’re packed with all the modern must-haves, from high-tech (Bang & Olufsen entertainment centers) to low (Molton Brown bath products).
A 201-seat private screening room is a rarity, to be sure, but the May Fair’s spa is its crown jewel. It’s vaguely Asian in design (as are all spas these days) and completely over-the-top — the best place for a mud bath after a long day of splashing cash all over the West End. Or all over the hotel — the May Fair’s own Palm Beach Casino is among the biggest in town, and its atmosphere of old-world glamour is an inducement to high-stakes playing.
How to get there:
The May Fair Hotel is just minutes from the Green Park tube station. If you’re arriving from Heathrow Airport, the most convenient transfer option to central London is the Heathrow Express train, which leaves Heathrow Airport every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes to arrive at Paddington Station. One-way fares are available from £18 and roundtrip fares from £32. By black cab, The May Fair Hotel is approximately a 45-minute ride from Heathrow Airport (depending on traffic) and can cost upwards of £50.

What I liked:
The hotel was more than I expected. The public spaces were clean, stylish, elegant and energetic without being in your face. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. We ordered room service a couple times, and the food was delicious, and delivered to our room within 15-20 minutes...unheard of! The beds and linens were sumptuous, just like home.
What the hotel could do better:
I came with my family. We stayed at the hotel for two nights upon arrival in London. Those two nights were flawless. We were put in a spacious and comfortable "family room" that was quiet and private. After spending a week away from London, we returned and spent our last night at the hotel prior to returning home to the US. This last stay was less than stellar. We were put in a much smaller room on the second floor directly across from the elevator and directly on top of the nightclub/lounge-bar. With a looming wake-up time of 6:00 a.m. to get our departing flight, we wanted nothing more than to have a good night's sleep. The noise from the nightclub below was so loud that we were unable to sleep. I called down to the manager and requested that we be changed to another, quieter room. The night manager was helpful but only after I stressed to him that his only option was to find us a new room. He held out on a different, quieter, more spacious family room (like the room we had on our first visit) and said he would have to split us up into two different rooms. Miraculously, after some motivation, he found us a different room. He sent a man up with the new key, but there was little effort to me and my 3 children move all our bags to the new room at midnight. I would not avoid this hotel from this experience, but I would suggest avoiding the second floor. Interestingly enough I am sure the logic behind our original room placement was because we are a family and the management anticipated that "we" would be making the noise. Ironically, we are very quiet people, and it was the hotel that made the noise.

What I liked:
Very large and clean room. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom was large with nice bath products, a large tub and a shower. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Location can't be beat! Tablet plus early check-in benefit is FABULOUS after the overnight flight from US. Beautiful fruit bowl brought to our room was another nice perk. US power outlet was greatly appreciated. Will definitely stay here again.
