The Mena House Oberoi Hotel
Pyramids Road, Giza
Cairo, Egypt
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Quiet
520 Rooms
Cairo hardly needs another reason to visit it, but the Mena House is a destination in and of itself. It’s a building with a remarkable history, a palace converted into a luxury hotel as far back as 1869, with one particular detail that will enthrall even the most seasoned and jaded traveler: it rests literally in the shadow of the Great Pyramids at Giza, which tower over the hotel and dominate the scenery by the pool.
Having hosted royals, celebrities and heads of state, all of whom are accustomed to a not exactly subtle form of luxury, the Mena House goes delightfully over the top. Once the pyramids’ exquisite perfection becomes tiresome, there’s an eighteen-hole golf course, perhaps the only one in the world where a wonder like the Sphinx is in danger of being hit by a stray ball. Horse and camel tours circle the pyramids, while back on the grounds a 24-hour fitness center and multiple restaurants, lounges and bars keep guests occupied (or at least satiated) around the clock.
Rooms and suites start modestly and range up to the extremely lavish. The best have balconies overlooking the pyramids, and the interiors match the hotel’s ornate style with traditionally luxe Egyptian furnishings alongside all the modern conveniences, from satellite TV to 24-hour butler service. And if you’re so unfortunate (or perhaps fortunate?) as to be here on business, you’ll find the hotel’s 20,000 square feet of work space more than adequate.
How to get there:
The Mena House Oberoi Hotel is approximately a 1 hour drive from Cairo International Airport and 45 minutes to downtown Cairo. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
