In Melbourne's once-derelict, now hip St Kilda is a unique little hotel called, simply, The Prince. Not the Prince Hotel, or Le Petit Prince, or Macchiavelli's Prince, and since its recent renovation, no longer the Prince of Wales. After all, is there anyone less cool than the Prince of Wales, his heart-throb offspring notwithstanding?
No, this is just The Prince, forty beautiful, minimal rooms, bathed in natural light, furnished in crisp dark wood and painted a shade of white that just seems cleaner than the average white. The Prince is cool in an effortless way, less intimidating, more welcoming than many "hip" hotels - after all, shouldn't "welcoming" be the mission of the hospitality industry?
Do not misunderstand; this hotel did not happen by accident - there are plenty of clever design flourishes, and the by now obligatory Starck bathrooms. But under the guiding hand of architect Alan Powell (a St Kilda local) The Prince has been effortlessly integrated into this ascendant neighborhood.
Mink, the hotel's vodka bar, is a local favorite, and attracts the most, well, attractive of the underground elite. This is quite fitting, given that the theme here is Soviet underground social club, exclusive, decadent, secretive. Less underground but no less praiseworthy is the busy Pub which has retained the original name, a nod to the property's past as a bohemian, free-wheeling drinking establishment.
The restaurant, Circa, and il Fornaio, a bakery and cafe, provide more (and better) dining options than one has any right to expect from such a small hotel. Did we mention the Wine Store? Or the Spa? And, incredibly (as if to prove just how much is going on here), the Prince Band Room plays host to international rock acts and DJs, and is, say it along with me now, the hip concert venue in Melbourne.
Like the city itself, this hotel is a most pleasant surprise. "Hip" is often a curse word here at Tablet, because it too often connotes an emphasis on flash over good old-fashioned hospitality. But don't hate The Prince because it's beautiful. A lesser hotel might settle for being cool, but The Prince backs up its surface with some real substance.
Very trendy, minimalist hotel with modern style and taste. Close to everything, great cafe next door and Aesop shop. Must comment on the complimentary Aesop toiletries, a wonderful addition. Fabulous hotel for the 35 year old's, have recommended it to two guys coming to Melbourne in July. It will be perfect for them.
today, ant chair, egg chair & alike become mainstream. i think the decors & furniture could go more "edgy" if the direction of the hotel design is more "on the edge". the bath tub & the sink are not ergonomic & the space for you to walk around in the room is very limited. the facilities are excellent. the pool & the deck are well executed. mink is great! i'm particularly impressed by the service. personal & helpful, given it's not the top of the class room rate it charges.
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:
Original
Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.
Relevant to other travelers
This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.
A personal opinion or recommendation
Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.
We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.
Non-commercial
Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.
Written with standard e-mail etiquette
This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

Tablet Inc. reserves the right to remove any hotel review or travel recommendation at its sole discretion, for violation of the above guidelines or for any other reasons.
These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
