The posh Johannesburg suburb of Houghton is the natural place for a hotel like The Residence — in these upscale environs the seemingly understated name properly conveys the grandeur it’s aiming for. Clearly, this is no ordinary residence, but a luxury boutique hotel in the top league, and while by residential standards it would be a bit of a palace, as a hotel it’s quite intimate indeed.

From the visual style it’s clear the Residence is aimed at something more than just visual impact; the look isn’t unstylish, but these spaces are meant to appeal to more than one sense at a time. Suites are equipped with extra-long king beds and goose-down pillows, and each one comes with either an outdoor shower, outdoor bath or terrace Jacuzzi, and the indoor baths, with their heated floors, aren’t too shabby either.

The house’s terraced construction makes for plenty of privacy, with varying views over the gardens, the pool and the Residence’s tennis court. There’s a spa with a pair of treatment rooms, and a white-tablecloth dining room, but the most memorable space has to be the Sky Bar, with its distant views and semi-private daybeds — perfect for a sunset drink or a sociable meal.
