Now that Chip Conley’s Joie de Vivre group has more or less conquered California, they’ve got their eye on the rest of the West, exporting their particular boutique-hotel vision to the Phoenix area. It’s a vision that’s perhaps less nakedly aspirational than the original Schrager model, where nightlife ruled the roost. This is a more accessible brand of boutique hospitality, stylish but practical — and as such, in the form of the Saguaro, it’s pretty much exactly the sort of thing Scottsdale needs.
The look is contemporary, and clearly goes out of its way to pay tribute to the Sonoran Desert landscape. Colorful rooms make the most of the plentiful Arizona sunshine, and open onto patios or balconies for a taste of the desert air. Modern touches like 42-inch televisions and iPod docks are standard, while the furnishings, with the exception of the Eames desk chairs, are traditional Mexican handicrafts.
Two pools, ringed with cabanas, form the Saguaro’s daytime social nexus, and at night the focus is on Distrito, a modern Mexican restaurant inspired by the Mexico City street food scene. It’s much more than a hotel kitchen; the Saguaro’s urban setting means it’s accessible to Scottsdale’s diners at large, and it’s the best kind of hotel restaurant — a local favorite.
