It’s hard to get more old-school Manhattan than the Shoreham’s midtown location. On 55th between 5th and 6th it’s close by to the park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square and the theatre district, as well as some of be best upscale shopping in the world along 5th Avenue.
Until recently it had a classic Manhattan look to match, a sort of dramatic prewar Gotham style, which has since been traded in for something brighter and more contemporary — some rooms in warm tones with stainless-steel headboards, others in cool whites, with translucent backlit Shoji doors. It’s not exactly South Beach, but for New York, it’s surprisingly sunny.
Though the Shoreham is clearly a mid-price boutique, comforts are plentiful; rooms are spacious enough, this being Manhattan and all, and they pack in a fair bit of luxury. The penthouse suites are over-the-top, as penthouses tend to be, complete with outdoor terraces and jacuzzi tubs; even the standard rooms, though, come with pillow-top mattresses and highly functional modern marble and slate bathrooms. Along with the restaurant, serving world-spanning modern cuisines, and the Shoreham Bar, stylish in green silk and translucent glass, there’s a gallery and events space and even a small fitness center.

What I liked:
Large rooms, tasteful, modern, but not overly decorated. Nice bar to relax after a day of shopping, museum-going.
What the hotel could do better:
Lots of rattling, pounding noises at night, assumed it was the heating system, but pretty disruptive.

What I liked:
Although it was pricey, the fact that it was a suite really equalized the price factor.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay!

What I liked:
The location is great - convenient to both East and West sides. The complimentary coffee bar is a very nice touch. The rooms are a good size by New York hotel standards.
What the hotel could do better:
The heating/cooling in our first room did not work and our room was 78 degrees! Additionally, the bed (boxspring/mattress) were super old, creaked unbearably loudly, and slanted to one side. We told the front desk about the temperature issue the next morning and was assured an engineer would fix it while we were out. When we returned that evening it still had not been fixed so we asked to change rooms. They put us in a two bedroom suite which was nice but again, the bed was terrible - old, creaky and slanted. Another bad night's sleep. The next night, we switched to the other bed which was comfortable but realized we tried to call down for a wake-up the next morning that none of the phone lines worked. I walked down to let them know and the front desk wrote down the wake-up time we needed. Not trusting them to actually come wake us up, my husband and I both set our phone alarms. Good thing we did because they never came to wake us up. They did give us a $75 credit for all the issues but I don't know that I would stay there again despite the great location.
